Anti-Trafficking Groups Warn Funding Suspension Might Facilitate Human Trafficking

An alliance of 74 legal, religious, and advocacy groups across the United States has raised alarms regarding the withholding of eighty-eight million dollars in public money allocated for individuals escaping forced labor.

Support Systems Under Threat

As stated in a collective communication, the Justice Department has suspended financial support for over a hundred assistance organizations that help victims leave abusive situations and obtain crucial support such as safe accommodation, mental health support, and guidance.

"Letting this money to be cut would enable human trafficking and endanger victims," the communication emphasizes. "Many regions will be without their primary support network, stranding victims with insecure living conditions."

Call to Action

The group is urging lawmakers to compel the federal government to restore the allocated money to protect thousands of affected individuals across the country.

This plea is in response to reports that the federal government has scaled down programs to combat human trafficking, although spokespersons dispute any withdrawal on human rights policies.

Consequences for Regions

  • Many assistance providers saw their funding end starting the final day of the previous month.
  • Lacking financial support, victims may be denied to lifesaving services like emergency housing, counseling, and advocacy.
  • Traffickers could exploit freely, increasing risks for vulnerable populations.

Government Response

Regarding questions over the delayed allocation, the department indicated that public dollars would be utilized at a later time, but emphasized that past recipients wouldn’t necessarily receive funding in the coming years.

Upcoming allocations will be made based on the leadership's goals, the department explained.

Past Endorsement

The letter additionally points out that lawmakers has consistently supported to continue these services over the previous decades, underscoring the vital necessity of properly financing lifesaving programs to assist individuals and avoid repeat victimization.
