Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts rocking Tehran, following statements from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
This event takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Major events preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of further discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They rejected assertions about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation is fluid, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.
